Are you looking for a pretty black butterfly mural for your little girl’s bedroom?  As a muralist, I couldn’t possibly NOT have a mural in my own daughter’s bedroom…and I just love this theme!

Here are some inspirational photos of her butterfly bedroom (so you can get some ideas) and ways we can work together.

A Black Butterfly Mural Customized to Match Curtains

My favourite part of painting murals for kids is incorporating their favourite things into their rooms.  It could be a hobby, book or the things they’re most drawn to.

My daughter is a super girly girl and loves drawing hearts, butterflies and stars.  Since her curtains have butterflies on them, I customized her mural to match!

Personalize it with Initials or a Name!

Another way to personalize a mural for your kids is to add their name or initial in whatever font suits their personality.  I added the letter “A” for Audrey’s name and she just adores the swirly script font I used.

If you’d love some ideas on how to personalize your hand-painted mural, I suggest booking a consultation.

The Mural Becomes Part of your Family

I love getting messages from clients that their kids pet their mural to sleep or say goodnight to it.  Their mural will become a part of your family and getting your kids to sleep in their own bedrooms will NOT be a problem once they have their very own mural – promise! ;)

How To Paint a Butterfly Mural

Here’s a quick time lapse video of how I painted Audrey’s mural.  I loved having her hang out with me while I painted it – she got a real kick climbing up and down the ladder.

The “Before” Photo

So this is the “Before” shot.

I always recommend doing a consultation with your kids before decorating.  It sharpens their decision making skills and, honestly, you’ll avoid any disappointment they might have later if they had their heart set on something.

Audrey and I had a consultation and I showed her the butterfly and letter “A” I wanted to paint.  We also talked about the colour of her walls.  Before redecorating her room, I sometimes felt like a bottle of Pepto Bismol exploded on her walls.  Audrey is pink obsessed and loved the colour, but I felt like it needed to be softened a bit and suggested a white feature wall.  She approved of the whole concept.

I also added a chandelier and a white medallion around it to add a totally girly feel.

The Inspirational Curtains

Drapes were the inspiration for the mural that Adrienne of AboutMurals.ca painted for her daughter, Audrey.

With my clients, I often use their drapes or bedding as inspiration for my custom, hand-painted murals so I used the same process for Audrey’s bedroom.  I pulled the black, lacey butterfly out of her curtains as inspiration for her mural.

I snapped a close-up photo of the butterfly from the drapes and then copy and pasted it into a Word document.

Print it on Paper and Overhead Transparencies

Then I printed the image out on both paper (so I could have all the small details close by when I was painting the butterfly mural) and a transparency to put onto my overhead projector.

Use an Overhead Projector

One reason I use an overhead projector with my clients is that I can show them how the image will appear on their walls right in the room.  They can give their feedback on whether they want the mural bigger, smaller or moved on the wall.

And my clients never worry about their kid’s safety or the air quality after I’m finished painting their mural.  I only use non-toxic acrylic paints and no-VOC latex paint, so it won’t affect the air quality in kids’ bedrooms.  They can sleep in their room the same night I paint my wall murals.
